H. 'Teaspoon'

Hosta 'Teaspoon'Looking a little bent-over at the moment, this little cutie was part of the group of 15 varieties that were added to our Hosta collection on Friday June 12th, 2009, a day which was almost like an early Christmas for Pieter. We'll live with the odd angle for this shoot for a while, new offsets will be at an upright attitude and odds are by season's end you'll hardly notice this odd angled shoot. And next year of course we won't remember what it started out as: a plant with an attitude....

It's remarkable what a few days of rehydration will do for an attitude, isn't it?

By the middle of September there isn't a hint of that initial bent attitude, we have a new offset and it flowered this year, what more can you ask for?

By the looks of the position of that new offset, it would seem that this cultivar has a somewhat rhizomatous growth behaviour. It certainly has a nice serrated edge to its leaves, kinda hard to see properly in any of these pictures though.

This detail of another picture gives a pretty good impression of that serrated edge.

I'll make a point of taking some better close-ups of the leaf edge in 2010, and we'll compare it with another cultivar I have, 'Blue Cadet', which for me has shown a seemingly uncharacteristic edge serration as well.

Well, it's now March 4th, 2010, and as you can see there is plenty of new growth on the main part of the crown. It'll be interesting to see what sort of growth and offsets we'll get on the single shoot towards the bottom right corner of the picture.

Hosta 'Teaspoon'This cultivar has a deserved reputation for vigour. Here it is 24th of April, 2011, not quite 2 years since it first arrived here, and I have already been able to take a small 4-shoot division and up-pot the remainder into a 1-gallon pot.

In 2010 I was hard pressed to see any signs of the serrated leaf edge this variety is known for. Not so this year, as is evident in the crop of the picture above.
