H.'Mawashibiki'

This is a 2012 seedling out of batch of 'Hacksaw' and pollen parent 'Ray of Hope' seeds. One of the more interesting seedlings out of this batch is this one, with rich green, glossy leaves. You may notice the label with the name 'Stingray' on it, but it has since come to my attention that there's already a cultivar with that name, so, I'll have to come up with something different next year.

I wanted to come up with a name that reflected at least part of this seedling's heritage. Seeing as 'Hacksaw' is the pod parent I thought I'd try and come up with a name that links to that heritage. I did a Wikipedia search of various types of saws and came up with a particular Japanese style called "Mawashibiki", a slender key-hole type saw which I thought most appropriate for this seedling. So, as of early 2013 'Mawashibiki' it is!

Hosta 'Mawashibiki' in the Klapwijk gardenBy late August 2013 it has grown nicely and has put up 2 scapes. The first one is very long and likely because the plant isn't mature enough the first scape is still a little on the floppy side, as you can see below. I cannot seem to find any pictures of the flowers on the first scape, I'll have to make a point of getting some of the ones on the second scape.

Hosta 'Mawashibiki' with long scape in the Klapwijk gardenA bit of an unusual angle, but it does show the full length of the scape and how it is held. It also shows the pods, the seeds are OP. It'll be interesting to see what sort of seedlings I'll get out of it in 2014.

Hosta 'Mawashibiki'The plant grew quite nicely in 2014. Only problem was that when there was evidence of scapes starting to grow, some rodent -either rat or squirrel- decided to start chomping away on the scapes, so, no scapes, no flowers, never mind seeds. This is the plant in late April 2014.

Hosta 'Mawashibiki'A little later in the season -June 8- and it's filling out. Here's hoping 2015 will bring flowers, and hopefully some seeds.
