H. 'Maui Buttercups'

In this picture the Maui Buttercups are in the center container soaking up some rainwater after making the journey from Ottawa.

About 12 days later and I must admit to being tickled pink with this new variety. It's bright, has great substance and I love that corrugation to the leaves! Dorothy, if you're reading this, you done real good gal, real good!

Just a little over two weeks in their new home and they seem to be settling down quite nicely, new leaves are showing up on both divisions.

Maui ButtercupsHere they are, it's October 6th and not a hint of senescence on any of the leaves. If it's this good looking this late in the season I wonder how late it comes up in the spring, early risers tend to be early sleepers.

This cultivar has a reputation for being a strong grower and certainly it didn't skip a beat being divided when I received it late July. No doubt one of these two divisions will get divided further in 2008. The one with the highest number of offsets will get divided, with some of these being Rossized I have no doubt.

When they initially started to show growth in 2008, both divisions came back seemingly as one shoot each. One of them, the one of the left, showed great growth, the other seemed to languish and I actually ended up putting it in our makeshift greenhouse to give it as much help as possible. As you can see, it must have helped: there are now 2 shoots on this division! It may be a little behind the other one in terms of number and size of leaves, but if their reputation means anything I don't think we'll see much of a difference between these come fall.

Hosta 'Maui Buttercups'A little over a month later and look at how they're growing! No signs of flower scapes as yet, but that's not that critical. Besides, I don't know even roughly when they are supposed to flower.

We're now into late July and even though you cannot really tell from this picture, there actually is a flower open. But, it's in an unusual spot: there would appear to be no scape and the flower is right at the crown between two petioles, very strange. You might be able to spot it at about the 11 o'clock position in the very center of the plant. And I just love the colour it has turned! Plus it has that great substance of course.

I agree the flower is almost impossible to see in the picture on the right, so how about some cropping to give you a better idea of what I'm trying to show.

Both containers showed nice growth when they came up spring 2009. The smaller one was transplanted into our Hosta nursery area and is now being over-shadowed by a 'Sum and Substance' and the larger one was divided so that I would have some divisions available for trades.

Hugo's Database has some more information about this variety.
