H. 'Rhino Hide'
Well, as you can see I am now the very proud owner of a 2 shoot OS division of 'Rhino Hide' and I couldn't have been more thrilled to receive this from Don Rawson on July 31st, 2009.
This poor thing spent 11 days in transit and while some of the leaves were very much worse for wear, it didn't take long for it to start perking up.
The root system was not overly large, but the roots were still quite firm.
Judging from the size of the division's leaves I'd venture to say this is not a fast grower, but time will tell. I'll be tickled pink to see it
come back up again next spring, even if it is only 2 shoots still.
I'm happy to report it's back up, with 2 shoots. Now, let's get some size to those leaves!
Late in the 2010 season I ended up dividing the rhizome and planted one into a pot and the other out in my 'nursery' area to give it some more room and allow it to eventually come closer to its genetic potential. Both divisions came back up in 2011 but it became clear quite quickly that the potted one was having severe root issues and its demise became inevitable. At least I had the larger one in the nursery area to fall back on. By mid-July however there was evidence it too was having root issues and so I dug it up and transplanted it into a pot with an extremely well-drained mix. It showed early signs of recovery but I guess I hadn't let the roots dry out long enough or something like that and by mid-September it too was history. Too bad, I'll have another one some day though....
