H. 'Lemon Delight'

Late April '07 I found myself visiting a new-to-me nursery in the area. Needless to say I ran across some Hostas, including a 6 inch pot with a smallish green, almost chartreuse Hosta that was quite obviously sporting. I picked it up, looked at it, didn't notice an identifying label and ended up putting it back on the table. I was intrigued enough about it though that I went back a couple of days later and purchased it. Still no label, so, I posted a couple of messages on a mailing list and a forum and quickly was steered in the right direction.

This picture shows what it looked like before I divided the plant. It has a reputation for being a rapid grower, flushing as many as three times a year. It looks as if I'll be able to divide it out into at least a half dozen plants, perhaps even more.

This close-up gives a little better idea of what this sport looks like now. It'll be interesting to see how its colouration changes over the course of the season.

While admittedly I have been calling this sport 'Lemon Delight' all along, it could actually end up proving to be something else altogether. Most all the pictures I have seen of this variety, and all the descriptions I can find, all show it as a yellow margined version, this one is definitely NOT yellow margined. And don't forget, when I purchased this plant it didn't come with any form of identification at all. At best this is all conjecture on my part. If nothing else some more sleuthing is in order to properly suss out what it is we're looking at here.

It's now 2009 and I feel quite comfortable in referring to this cultivar as 'Lemon Delight'. It's been a strong grower, as are all 3 members of the Lemon family I now own.

Hugo's Database has some more details on this variety.
